The problem
Pendant lamps over dining tables often glare into the eyes of whoever sits opposite. We wanted a lamp you could hang at eye level.
Inspiration and concept
A deep cone keeps the bulb out of sight from the side. A diffuser disc inside the rim softens the light pointing down.
Sketches, prototypes and iterations
Early shades were turned from solid timber and cracked in Dhaka's humidity. We switched to laminated blanks glued from thin layers, which hold their shape.
Engineering and manufacturing decisions
The diffuser sits on a turned step inside the rim, held by friction alone, so it can be removed to change the bulb.
The canopy and holder are standard parts, so any electrician can service the lamp.
Materials, processes and assembly
Laminated walnut or oak, opal acrylic diffuser, braided fabric cable.
The result
The lamp is now in regular production in small batches.
Challenges and lessons
Humidity matters more than we expected. Every timber product is now prototyped through a full monsoon season before release.
